X-RAY PRESCRIPTIONS IN PHYSIOTHERAPY

Since May 21, 2020, physiotherapists holding a certification issued by the Ordre professionnel des physiothérapeutes du Québec (OPPQ) are authorized to prescribe X-rays under the following conditions:

Physio Thera Plus

For a musculoskeletal issue

Physio Thera Plus

Acute trauma (fall, impact, accident, etc.) that occurred within the last 72 hours

Physio Thera Plus

The patient has not consulted a physician prior

Physiotherapist authorized to prescribe X-rays:

Caroline Toulouse (Plateau and Villeray Clinics)

How Does It Work?

Step 1

During an initial assessment conducted by the physiotherapist, at the patient’s expense, the physiotherapist will determine whether it is appropriate to undergo an X-ray.

Step 2

Once the prescription is issued, the patient can have an X-ray within 72 hours of the trauma at any clinic or radiology center in Quebec of their choice.

X-rays are covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan (RAMQ).

Step 3

Regardless of the X-ray results, the physiotherapist will communicate them to the patient within 48 hours of issuing the X-ray prescription.

    • If the result is positive and you have a family doctor, the physiotherapist will contact your doctor to ensure you receive prompt care.
    • If the result is positive and you do NOT have a family doctor, the physiotherapist will direct you to a clinic or the nearest emergency department.
    • If the result is negative, the physiotherapist will inform you and proceed with the initial assessment, providing the appropriate treatment.

The Advantage of This Process

  • Faster access to an X-ray if necessary.
  • X-ray prescriptions by physiotherapists encourage collaboration among healthcare professionals, including physicians, medical imaging technologists, and physiotherapists.
