X-RAY PRESCRIPTIONS IN PHYSIOTHERAPY

Since May 21, 2020, physiotherapists who hold an authorization issued by the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) are permitted to prescribe X-rays under specific conditions, including the following:

For a musculoskeletal issue

Acute trauma (fall, impact, accident, etc.) that occurred within the last 72 hours

The patient has not consulted a physician prior

Physiotherapist Authorized to Prescribe X-rays:

How Does It Work?

Step 1

During an initial physiotherapy assessment (fees apply), the physiotherapist will determine whether an X-ray is clinically indicated based on your condition and examination findings.

Step 2

Once the prescription has been issued, the patient can have an X-ray performed within 72 hours of the injury at any radiology clinic or imaging center in Québec of their choice.

X-rays are covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

Step 3

Regardless of your X-ray results, the physiotherapist will communicate the findings to you within 48 hours of receiving the radiology report.

If the result is positive and you have a family doctor, the physiotherapist will contact your physician so that you can receive appropriate medical follow-up as quickly as possible.
If the result is positive and you do NOT have a family doctor, the physiotherapist will refer you to a medical clinic or the nearest emergency department.
If the result is negative, the physiotherapist will inform you and continue with the initial assessment, providing the appropriate treatment plan based on your condition.
